Indigenous Perspectives

The culture of The First Peoples of Australia is a core component of Balnarring Pre-school’s philosophy. The Boon Wurrung people call the Mornington Peninsula their home.

All the staff have been and will continue to be, involved in developing their knowledge of this culture. They have participated in many workshops with Indigenous Consultant Priscilla Reid-Loynes as well as attended various conference presentations. They have also worked with The Boon Wurrung Foundation.

The pre-school has written their own Acknowledgment to Country which is displayed at the entrance and is included in all correspondence. At the commencement of each year the families are invited to a Welcome to Country ceremony as we welcome them to the Pre-school and Boon Wurrung Country.

Many resources are available on a daily basis to compliment the children’s learning and make the First Peoples culture visible and authentic.

Going out on Country connects the children on the land which develops their understanding to First Peoples culture.

Throughout the year the children hear stories from Elders, participate in music and movement related to First Peoples and learn some of the Boon Wurrung language.

We are constantly seeking opportunities to engage with the Elders, Indigenous Consultant and artists to enrich all aspects of the program.
